To play the job as Elvis Presley is a daunting job. The world is full of and protective fans who be watching and analyzing every movement and curled lip. The most highly praised performance (and rightfully so) was performed by Kurt Russell in “Elvis,” the 1979 TV film written by John Carpenter.
A 30-year-old actor known as Austin Butler – probably best known for his character in the role of Charles Manson follower Tex Watson in “Once Upon a Time ….in Hollywood” He has shared his perspective on the famous actor in the upcoming theatrical production “Elvis,” and he is a total knock right out of the park.
The film starts with a huge visual splash, Presley’s famous “TCB” (“Taking Care of Business”) logo that is a blend of the Warner Bros. shield. We are then introduced to Presley’s former manager, Col. Tom Parker (a heavily-made-up Tom Hanks) nearly dead and determined to put the record straight as to whether the man was a manipulative charlatan , or someone who was in the best interest of the singer in mind. In fact, Hanks was spending between two and a half to five hours every day in the makeup chair in order to get the appearance of a heavyset promoter.
The script written by Luhrmann, frequent collaborators Craig Pearce, Sam Bromell (“The Get Down”) and Jeremy Doner (“The Killing”) is moving in a fast-paced manner and features a lot of narration by the colonel as well as a variety of characters, as the film tries to explore the more important events in the life of the singerand all within the space of two hours, 39 minutes.
He meets his parents Vernon as well as Gladys, which are played by Richard Foxburgh and Helen Thompson. These two Australian actors were replaced by Rufus Sewell and Maggie Gyllenhaal who had to quit the show when the production was shut down for six months in the initial stages of COVID-19.
We get to know about Elvis the boy he was in his early years, and his musical influences which originate from local Black artists, and then we see his first concert where the vocalist is nervous and unleashes his physical energy on a snobby audience who’s immediately seduced. (The responses of some female concert goers are truly amazing.)
The colonel plays a key to the character of this film and Hanks shows Parker’s incredible abilities as a publicist to full effect, in particular during a scene at a fair, where he performs an unorthodox dance with a potential client, first in a confusing hall-of-mirrors followed by an edifice called a Ferris Wheel. The incredible visual talents of director Antoine Luhrmann are evident throughout the film, whether at a carnival, when he’s having a life-changing conversation on the Hollywood sign, or directing rehearsals on stage for The Presley’s Las Vegas residency. The film is incredibly beautiful and a sight to behold.
The footage that recreates the famous show in the International Hotel, as well as the highly acclaimed comeback television special from 1968 are so accurate that I found myself contemplating if I was actually watching newsreel footage of these shows rather than new scenes for movies.
Butler (who beat other actors like Miles Teller and Harry Styles for the Elvis role) worked with a coach to imitate Presley’s stage mannerisms, kicksand Karate chops and more. The actor captures the King’s charisma in such a way that it’s frightening. He’s attractive and confident, but at the same time, vulnerable. Butler is also able to do his own singing in early Elvis songs in which Presley’s voice was being incorporated into. The songs from later eras are all genuine Presley recordings.
